GCDD, L’ARCHE ATLANTA WITH STORYTELLERS MACON AND PARTNERS TO HOST STORYTELLING WORKSHOPS IN MACON

(June 13, 2022, Atlanta, Ga.) – The Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities (GCDD), L’Arche Atlanta, Storytellers Macon, the Macon-Bibb County Parks and Recreation Department, and StoryMuse are hosting two Storytelling Workshops in Macon, Georgia. Residents in Macon now have the opportunity to become storytellers and participate in an upcoming GCDD storytelling project to speak about their experiences about living with a disability and experience a free intro to storytelling through an in-person and virtual workshop.

Since 2018, GCDD teams up with talented writers and photographers who set out across the state of Georgia to collect great stories about people with developmental disabilities. The GCDD Storytelling Project includes the short film “6000 Waiting, the Hidden Voices podcast, Treasure Maps, and written stories and photos on the GCDD website.

“GCDD and L’Arche Atlanta have a long-term partnership and relationship that we continue to build on each year and this year they wanted to focus on stories that relate to poverty. Storytellers Macon is a local partner for the workshop, and the Macon-Bibb County Parks and Recreation is a sponsor who is providing the space for the workshops,” said Shannon Turner, Story Muse’s Founder and Lead Artist and Storyteller who will be facilitating the workshops.

During the workshops, participants will learn the basics of how to tell a story and why it is important. GCDD, L’Arche Atlanta, and partners hope to get people excited in hopes of getting people to apply and participate in sharing their stories.

“GCDD has a history of going across the state of Georgia to get stories. Macon is a great place to go back to and recruit storytellers, as we tried to get more stories from that area out,” said Turner. “These are free introductory workshops where people learn about storytelling. Towards the end of the workshop, they can apply to participate as a part of the Treasure Maps Project.”

The two storytelling workshops will be held Tuesday, June 28, 1-2:30 pm and Wednesday, June 29, 6-7:30 pm at the Elaine Lucas Senior Center in Macon, Georgia. To register for the free workshops, click here: https://bit.ly/TreasureMapsWkshp.
