The following resources are available to support individuals and families affected by Hurricane Helene:  

American Red Cross
The American Red Cross has opened shelters and feeding centers in areas affected by Hurricane Helene. Click here to view their disaster relief and recovery resources. 

Crisis Clean Up
Crisis Clean Up offers free services to those needing help with cleaning up hurricane-related damages. Call 844-965-1386 or visit their website to be connected with volunteer groups. 

DBHDD Office of Disaster Mental Health Services

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Serious Needs Assistance
FEMA provides help for disaster-related expenses like food, water, baby formula, and other emergency supplies. Click here to access their quick reference guide. 

Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA)
GEMA offers resources on disaster recovery, including information on SNAP benefits and assistance from the Red Cross. Click here to view their response to Hurricane Helene. 

The following surveys inform FEMA/GEMA of community needs:

FEMA Disaster Assistnce for Homeowners and Renters in McIntosh County
Homeowners and renters in McIntosh County who had uninsured damage or losses caused by Hurricane Helene can now apply for FEMA disaster assistance.

FEMA may be able to help with serious needs, displacement, temporary lodging, basic home repair costs, personal property loss or other disaster-caused needs. Previously, Appling, Atkinson, Bacon, Ben Hill, Berrien, Brantley, Brooks, Bryan, Bulloch, Burke, Butts, Camden, Candler, Charlton, Chatham, Clinch, Coffee, Colquitt, Columbia, Cook, Dodge, Echols, Effingham, Elbert, Emanuel, Evans, Fulton, Glascock, Glynn, Hancock, Irwin, Jeff Davis, Jefferson, Jenkins, Johnson, Lanier, Laurens, Liberty, Lincoln, Long, Lowndes, McDuffie, Montgomery, Newton, Pierce, Rabun, Richmond, Screven, Tattnall, Telfair, Thomas, Tift, Toombs, Treutlen, Ware, Warren, Washington, Wayne and Wheeler counties were authorized for assistance to households.

There are several ways to apply: Go online to DisasterAssistance.gov, use the FEMA App, call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 or visit a Disaster Recovery Center. The FEMA Helpline is open every day and help is available in most languages.

Note: The deadline to apply for disaster assistance is December 2, 2024.

Here is what you will need when you apply:

  • A current phone number where you can be contacted.
  • Your address at the time of the disaster and the address where you are now staying.
  • Your Social Security number.
  • A general list of damage and losses.
  • Banking information if you choose direct deposit.
  • If insured, the policy number or the agent and/or the company name.

If you have homeowners, renters or flood insurance, you should file a claim as soon as possible. FEMA cannot duplicate benefits for losses covered by insurance. If your policy does not cover all your disaster expenses, you may be eligible for federal assistance.

Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC)

GA Tools for Life

Salvation Army
The Salvation Army has opened feeding centers in hurricane-affected areas. Click here for a list of service locations.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Benefits, Replacement SNAP
Georgia residents who received Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in September can report food lost due to power outages related to the Hurricane. Click here to report SNAP benefit losses.
