A Public Awareness Video Series, "Voices Beyond the Mirror" - Part 2

GCDD has created a series of public awareness video clips to mark the 40th Anniversary of the DD Bill of Rights Act of 1971 called "Voices Beyond the Mirror." The video series provides a thoughtful look into the everyday realities of living with different types of disabilities. Last week we featured the centerpiece video of the series and highlighted three stories of individuals living in the community. The series also includes video shorts of eight personal messages from people with disabilities and a historical perspective on the progress made and the challenges ahead.

Each week we will offer a new clip of the entire series to spark more conversation and spread knowledge. The following reflection on public attitudes about blindness is from Anisio Correia and his wife, Agnes.

Anisio Correia is an executive with the Center for the Visually Impaired.

“I think people do make judgments on how you look. If you are blind, I have people that immediately assume that if you are blind, you can’t hear well so they speak louder.” Anisio Correia

“The hope lies in the children, as they learn and grow that they be more accepting and tolerant of those differences.” Agnes Correia
